Alfatronix battery chargers for onboard DC-DC systems

A DC-DC battery charger does not operate from mains voltage but from the vehicle's direct-current electrical system. The Alfatronix range includes versions that provide a 12 V DC or 24 V DC output from a 12 V DC input, as well as versions that provide a 12 V DC or 24 V DC output from a 24 V DC input. The input and output voltage must be selected according to the complete battery system.

How does the intelligent charging process work?

The intelligent charging process uses Standby, Trickle, Bulk, Top Off, and Float operating states. When a deeply discharged battery is detected, the charger operates in Trickle mode for up to 10 minutes. This is followed by Bulk charging with the nominal charging current limited, while Top Off and Float modes maintain the battery's state of charge.

12 V and 24 V input and output versions

  • 12 V DC input and 12 V DC output: 6 A.
  • 24 V DC input and 12 V DC output: 12 A.
  • 12 V DC input and 24 V DC output: 3 A.
  • 24 V DC input and 24 V DC output: 6 A.

When selecting a charger, the input voltage, the nominal voltage of the battery to be charged, and the required charging current must be checked together.

Isolated onboard battery chargers with 3-12 A charging current

The devices in this category feature an isolated output and switch-mode technology. The 3-12 A versions can be selected for different onboard electrical systems. The devices weigh 600 g and are installed using a separately mountable three-hole Click 'n' Fit mounting clip.

What does the battery charger's status LED indicate?

The yellow LED indicates Standby status. The flashing pattern of the green LED shows the Trickle, Bulk, or Top Off charging state, while a continuously illuminated green LED indicates Float mode. The red LED warns of excessively high or low battery voltage, expiry of the safety time limit, or an unsuccessful start.

Thermal and current limiting, mounting clip, and FASTON connectors

The devices feature thermal and current limiting, an LED status indicator, and FASTON connectors. Float Mode can be selected using the Mode terminal. The terminal must not be connected to the input terminals of the device, as this may cause permanent damage.

What should be considered when installing the vehicle battery charger?

  • The device must be installed in a cool, dry, and ventilated location.
  • It must not be mounted on hot vehicle components or in direct sunlight.
  • The input and output cables must be protected with suitable fuses.
  • The circuit must be disconnected before wiring.
  • The input and output voltage and polarity must be checked.
  • Sufficient space must be provided around the device for airflow.

A minimum cable cross-section of 2.5 mm2 is recommended for the 6 A charger, while at least 4 mm2 is recommended for the 12 A version. If the distance between the charger and the battery is greater, the cable cross-section must be increased.
