What types of applications are adhesive tapes recommended for?
Before buying an adhesive tape, it is important to think about the purpose for which you want to use it and the surface you want to apply it to. The crucial question is always how long the tape should last. For example, tape often used for painting can usually be removed after a few hours without leaving any residue. However, if waterproof universal adhesive tape is used, which is highly adhesive, it is difficult to remove the tape without leaving some of the adhesive on the surface.
For outdoor use, it is imperative that the tape is water repellent and weather resistant. Acrylic double-sided adhesive tape should be used when the goal is to have the tape adhere on both sides. For example, if you want to fix an object to a wall or the bottom of a shelf in the garden, while DIY or working.
What is the adhesive strength of different adhesive tapes?
The adhesion of adhesive tape depends on a number of factors. This includes the type of adhesive, the surface being applied and environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. There are several ways to determine the adhesive strength of an adhesive tape. What are they?
Many manufacturers give adhesive strength in grams per inch or newtons per metre. This information is a good starting point for knowing the adhesive strength of the tape. Once you know the adhesion strength, you can categorize the tape based on that.
High adhesive strength: 1.5 N/ 10 mm
Middle adhesive strength: approx.1,5-3 N/10 mm
High adhesive strength: > 3,0 N/mm
An alternative is to perform an adhesion test on the adhesive tape, which works as follows. The tape is placed on a clean, dry surface and then an attempt is made to peel it off. The more force you need to remove the tape, the greater its adhesive strength. But if we really need to know the adhesive strength of the tape, we can use a special service that measures the adhesive strength of the tape.
How to choose the right adhesive tape
We can use adhesive tape not only for our work, but also for home use, even in the garden. Therefore, we have a wide range of choices. The properties of the adhesive tape determine whether it is water and weather resistant, whether it is suitable for repair and insulation work, to which surfaces it adheres particularly well and how easy it is to remove.
Universal adhesive tape is mainly used for repair, fixing or insulation. Because it is extremely adhesive, it cannot be removed without leaving a residue on the surface. Masking tape is most suitable for use in painting work. It adheres to slightly uneven surfaces and can usually be removed without leaving any residue. Plastic masking tape, also known as duct tape, can be found in almost every household or plumber's box to seal the ends of cables and wires. But don't forget double-sided adhesive tapes, which can be used to stick objects together easily.
What materials do adhesive tapes stick well to?
Adhesive tapes adhere perfectly to any surface, whether wood, metal, plastic or glass, as long as it is dry and free of dust, grease or other contaminants.
What to look for when buying adhesive tapes?
There are three things to consider to ensure that the tape adheres properly. These three aspects are adhesion, cohesion and adhesion. The relationship between these three forces determines the quality of the adhesive, its usability and therefore the properties of the tape. Adhesion is a technical term that describes the properties of an adhesive in terms of the time required for the adhesive to adhere to surfaces. If the adhesive tape creates a strong bond even at low pressure and short contact times, it is said to have a strong adhesion.
If higher pressure and longer waiting times are required, then adhesion is low. The bond strength, also known as cohesion, is how tear resistant the adhesive tape is. If heavy objects are to be glued together with it, its cohesion should not be reduced. If the bond strength is reduced, the tape will tear. And adhesion is a measure of the holding force required to create a high level of adhesion between two surfaces.
How to store adhesive tapes to preserve their effectiveness?
All adhesive tapes are subject to the aging process. The longer they are stored, the more their aforementioned properties change. However, as a general rule, under optimal storage conditions, the performance of the adhesive tape will not change during the first six months. Tapes with good ageing resistance will still perform as well as newly manufactured tapes after 12 months of storage.
