Superglue

In a household, there are always accidents, big or small, when something breaks, malfunctions or breaks. It's especially annoying when it happens to one of our favourite cups or our child's beloved toys. The obvious thing to do is to reach for the so-called universal superglue. This glue is really versatile, because it can be used to rejoin and repair a wide range of materials. Read more...

It's important to apply it to the surface in as thin a layer as possible, because the sooner it sets. Unfortunately, in many cases, the bond between the adhesive and the material will only last for a short time, as it will release when exposed to heat or high humidity.

What surfaces can superglue be used on?

Using superglue is quick and easy. However, there are times when you need a special adhesive, especially if you need to repair a larger surface. These adhesives have a liquid consistency that can be used to repair small to large cracks and defects. They're easy to dispense and can be very useful in certain areas.

Due to its liquid state, care should be taken to avoid getting too little material on the surface to be glued. And remove excess material quickly. Make sure that the surface to be repaired is dry, clean and free of dust and grease before proceeding.

What materials is superglue recommended for?

In general, most instant adhesives can bond a wide range of materials. But let's look at exactly what these materials are. For use, manufacturers recommend it for plastics, glass, metal, wood and many other materials. So, if you want to glue broken wine glasses, our suggestion is to use a super glue specially formulated for glass.

Why is this necessary? Because items repaired with this type of superglue can be cleaned in a dishwasher, for example. But there are special superglues that are used for joining metal, for example. But make sure that the adhesive used for plastic does not contain any corrosive substances.

  • Materials: Ideal for a wide range of plastics, but make sure the glue does not contain corrosive raw materials.
  • Metals: With this material, the super glue forms a strong bond. However, surfaces must be free of grease.
  • Rubber: It is important to note here that in this case a higher elasticity adhesive should be used, as rubber stretches.
  • Wood: Thorough surface preparation is required, but the end result will be successful.
  • Paper: Instant adhesive is suitable for bonding paper, but it will penetrate the paper base material and leave stains and spots.
  • Ceramic: This material is generally easy to glue, provided the break points are thoroughly cleaned and all pieces fit together accurately.
  • Glass: Special instant adhesives are recommended for this material.

How quickly does the superglue dry and set?

Store-bought superglues can be used safely between -45 and +95 degrees Celsius, which is fully adequate for household use.

This type of glue, as the name suggests, dries very quickly because it contains all the ingredients that cause a rapid chemical action. Instant adhesives, because they provide very good adhesion, are also rightly called super fast instant adhesives.

How can superglue be removed from skin or other surfaces?

Most superglues are soluble due to their chemical properties. Adding a little warm water can speed up this process. You can then use a spatula or brush to quickly remove any excess glue stuck to your skin or other surfaces, but it can also be dissolved using acetone.

How long can superglue be stored? Does it have an expiry date?

Ideal storage for superglues is in a dark, dry place and at a temperature of around +15 degrees Celsius. In this case, the shelf life is at least 24 months.

If stored in a drawer at home, i.e. around +22 degrees Celsius, the shelf life is at least 12 months.

How do I choose the right type of superglue for my project?

The choice of the right adhesive depends on its viscosity. Low viscosity adhesives penetrate deep into small gaps, making them ideal for fine cracks and very narrow joints. Medium viscosity adhesives are universal and can be used for a variety of materials and techniques. They spread more slowly and allow for more precise placement of the parts to be bonded.

High viscosity adhesives do not run, they stay exactly where they are applied. They are ideal for vertical applications or when a filling function is required, for example, they can be easily used to cover uneven surfaces.
