If one of your electrical appliances or tools doesn't have a long enough cable, you'll need an extension cord or a power strip. When buying one, you should pay attention to the following details. For example, the length, the number of sockets, the cross-section of the wire, the type of insulation, the maximum load, and whether the extension has a thermal cut-out fuse. Read more...

If you want to buy a distribution box for indoor use, the IP20 version is sufficient, but if you want to use the extension cord or cable drum in the bathroom or outdoors, you should choose the IP44 version.

What length of cable should we choose for the Cable Extension and Distribution Set?

Before buying an extension cord, you need to define its purpose. Many manufacturers offer relatively short two- to five-metre-long extension cords to which you can connect lamps or other household appliances. However, if your living area is larger than 50 square metres, you will need a longer mains adapter. You can choose between 15, 20, 25, 40 or 50-metre cable drums. But be careful, extension cords longer than 10 metres can be a trip hazard in either domestic or industrial applications, unless you use a professional cable drum.

These types of extension cords are also a good choice for gardening, for example, or if you want to connect a projector on your terrace. Depending on the size of the area, you may even need a longer distributor. You should use such a length if you are carrying out renovation or conversion work, for example, and want to connect various tools. A long cable is particularly useful if only one socket in the whole flat or house is powered during renovation. We therefore recommend that you choose a cable drum with a longer cable length.

What is the maximum load capacity of eCable Extension and Distribution Set?

As indicated above, when choosing a power extension or distribution box, we must pay special attention to the cable parameters, because every cable has its own load capacity limit. If this limit is exceeded, uncontrolled thermal expansion can occur, which can lead to short circuits or damage to the connected equipment.

In principle, all extension cords are suitable for use with 230 V mains voltage. However, the extenders can withstand different amperages and are designed for different power ratings of end users. A 10 amp extension cord is sufficient for most household appliances. Their current ratings generally fall within the range of 0.1 A to 10 A.

But you won't be able to supply electricity to a welding machine, for example, with a 16A extension cord because its current rating is around 500A. What is also important when choosing a power distributor is the maximum power rating. Choose a distributor that can transmit approximately 4000 watts when split, and between 1100 and 1200 watts when wound together.

Is there a way of fixing the Cable Extension and Distribution Set to avoid tangling the cable?

If you are not using a power extension cord, it is a good idea to coil it up, but it is best to store the cable in a cable drum to prevent the cable from tangling. This will also prevent the cable from breaking. But for even greater safety, choose a junction box or cable box that is brightly coloured so that it is more visible! Although extension cables are mainly available in white and black, for outdoor use you should choose an orange or red model, which means that the cable will remain visible in poor visibility conditions and won't be a tripping hazard.

How many sockets does the extension or distribution box have?

It depends on the model, but you can choose a power extension with one, three, four, five, six or eight sockets. In each case, choose according to how many devices you want to connect to the cable drum.

How many extension cords can be safely connected in a row?

Connect a maximum of one extension cable per socket. Otherwise, there is a risk of uncontrolled heat build-up and even the risk of an electrical spark. This can cause not only a short circuit but also a fire hazard.

Also, make sure that the distribution box has a grounded socket for greater safety. Some distributors are equipped with a switch, the use of which is essential for the extension cord to work. In DND's webshop you can choose from a wide range of extenders and distributors to suit your needs.
