What is an electrosmog shielding canopy?
An electrosmog shielding canopy consists of shielding fabric suspended above the bed and surrounding the sleeping area. The textile is designed to attenuate high-frequency electromagnetic fields, including mobile communication, WLAN and certain 5G frequencies. The canopy does not require permanent structural alterations, so it can also be installed in rented properties and removed when moving.
On its own, the canopy provides textile shielding from the sides and above. A separate shielding floor mat is required to shield fields coming from below. Together, the canopy and the floor mat form a closed shielding system that also contributes to shielding low-frequency alternating electric fields.
How does the shielding fabric attenuate radio-frequency radiation?
The radio-frequency power density measured after the signal passes through the shielding fabric is lower than the power density measured in front of the textile. Shielding attenuation is calculated from the ratio of these values and is expressed in dB. An attenuation of 40 dB corresponds to a shielding effectiveness of 99.99 percent, while 50 dB corresponds to 99.999 percent.
The textile versions in this category provide nominal attenuation values of 38, 40, 42 or 48 dB at 1 GHz. Attenuation depends on frequency, so the value specified at 1 GHz must not be treated as a constant value across the entire frequency range.
Pyramid-shaped or box-shaped electrosmog shielding canopy
When should you choose a pyramid-shaped electrosmog shielding canopy?
The pyramid-shaped version is designed for single beds with a flat sleeping surface and a maximum width of 100 cm. It is suspended from a single ceiling point and can therefore also be installed under a sloping ceiling. Due to the inclined side walls, the interior space is more limited, and the canopy is not recommended for beds with a high headboard or tall structural elements.
Entry is provided through an overlapping opening. The lower circumference is 1150 cm, the height is 240 cm and the dimensional tolerance is plus or minus 5 percent. The package includes the shielding textile, fastening materials and a support ring with a diameter of 100 cm.
The construction of a box-shaped shielding canopy
The box-shaped version provides more vertical side walls and a larger interior space. The single-bed version is designed for beds up to 120 cm wide and measures 120 x 220 x 220 cm. The double-bed version measures 220 x 220 x 220 cm. The dimensional tolerance is plus or minus 5 percent for both versions.
The box-shaped canopy is suspended from four ceiling points and is therefore not suitable for sloping ceilings. Separate rods can be inserted into the four fabric loops at the top to maintain the rectangular shape. Entry is provided through an overlapping opening.

Shielding attenuation and measurement frequency range
The high-frequency shielding measurement range extends from 600 MHz to 40 GHz. Measurements are performed using test configurations based on IEEE Std 299-2006 or ASTM D4935-10. Depending on the measurement method, the test setup includes a vector network analyser, a shielded measurement chamber and either horn antennas or a TEM cell.
Independent measurement results for the cotton-based textile with 42 dB attenuation include data for LTE, GSM, DECT, WLAN and 5G frequency bands. The documented attenuation may decrease as frequency increases, so the full frequency response curve should also be considered when selecting a canopy.
Shielding against HF radiation, WLAN and 5G
The shielding canopies are made from textiles tested in the high-frequency range from 600 MHz to 40 GHz. This range covers both the FR1 5G frequency range from 600 MHz to 6 GHz and the FR2 range from 24 GHz to 40 GHz. The tested bands also include LTE, GSM, DECT and WLAN frequencies.
The shielding performance of the canopy is determined by the fabric, the frequency, the overlap of the openings, the continuity of the textile and the lower closure. After use, the entrance section must be returned to a fully overlapping position.
When is a shielding floor mat required?
A shielding floor mat is required when electromagnetic fields coming from below the bed also need to be attenuated. The mat must be positioned so that the lower textile section of the canopy overlaps it correctly. The universal floor mat consists of three textile panels that form a 250 x 280 cm surface including the overlap and provides 111 dB attenuation at 1 GHz.
Before configuring the complete system, measurements should be used to determine the directions from which the exposure originates. When no significant exposure is present from below, the need for a floor mat can be assessed accordingly.
Shielding fabric materials and air permeability
The range includes cotton-based, voile, natural-look and silver-tulle textile versions. Depending on the fabric, the specified attenuation at 1 GHz ranges from 38 to 48 dB. The cotton-based version offers good light and air permeability and is resistant to creasing.
When selecting the textile, shielding attenuation, light transmission, air permeability, fabric appearance and care instructions should all be considered.
How is an electrosmog shielding canopy installed?
The pyramid-shaped version requires one ceiling suspension point. The box-shaped version is fixed at four points, and the rectangular upper section can be stabilised with separate rods. The rods are not included in the standard package. The ceiling fastening must be installed using fixings suitable for the construction material and the load.
The lower section of the canopy must hang freely around the bed. The textile must not be exposed to permanent mechanical tension, sharp furniture edges or pinching.
