Further details of Icom SM-J1 Dual Element Dynamic Desktop Microphone

The Icom SM-J1 is a desktop microphone designed for Ham Radio operation. It uses dual dynamic microphone elements with selectable unidirectional and omnidirectional patterns. The microphone can be removed from its desktop stand and installed on a boom arm with a 5/8-inch thread. It also supports connection of a PTT footswitch and operation as a PC microphone through USB Type-C.

Icom SM-J1 dual dynamic microphone elements

The dual dynamic microphone elements provide a frequency response for clear and rich audio. Breath noise and plosives remain controlled during close-mic use. The dynamic elements provide durability against shock, vibration and environmental changes.

SM-J1 selectable directional patterns

• Unidirectional mode captures front-facing audio while reducing off-axis background noise
• In unidirectional mode, bass frequencies increase as the microphone distance decreases, which may affect intelligibility during SSB operation
• Omnidirectional mode maintains a consistent frequency response regardless of microphone distance
• Moving closer to the microphone in omnidirectional mode increases talk power for DX contacts and pileups

Unidirectional mode can be used in shared spaces or for outdoor operation, while omnidirectional mode can be used for longer conversations in quiet spaces.

Icom SM-J1 boom arm and PTT connection

• The microphone can be detached from the supplied desktop stand
• Compatible with user-supplied boom arms using a 5/8-inch thread
• Using a boom arm reduces the transmission of desk vibrations to the microphone
• A commercially available footswitch can be connected for PTT control
• The footswitch enables foot-operated PTT control

Foot-operated PTT keeps the operator's hands available for radio and keyboard operation. This function can also be used during contests while performing Search and Pounce and logging tasks.

SM-J1 controls and connections

• Manufacturer Select Switch for use with Icom, Alinco or JVC KENWOOD transceivers
• Function keys assignable to frequently used radio functions
• LOW-CUT switch for removing low-frequency components from the input audio
• PTT LOCK switch for fixing and releasing the transmit state
• Adjustment for fine-tuning the microphone output level
• USB Type-C port for use as a PC microphone

A screwdriver for fine-tuning the microphone output level is supplied. A user-supplied USB Type-C cable is required for USB connection to a PC. When connected to a PC with a USB cable, the microphone switches and keys are not activated.
