DVB-T Terrestrial Receiver

- further categories

In order to know exactly what indoor unit you need, we need to clarify what exactly DVB-T means. This acronym stands for Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial. In English it means Digital Terrestrial Video Broadcasting, which is the European standard for digital terrestrial television. The system transmits compressed digital audio, video and other data in MPEG transport stream format, a common video compression standard. The DVB-T signal is broadcast by terrestrial transmitters and can be received with classical antennas. Read more...

How does this mode of transmission differ from the original analogue transmission?
In this case, the signals are transmitted in digital format. The advantage is that a much larger amount of data can be transmitted compared to analogue transmission. If your television does not have a built-in DVB-T receiver for decoding this mode, you will need a decoder, a so-called set-top box.

What you need to know about DVB-T2 standard?

In 2011, the second generation of the DVB-T standard was introduced. Thanks to the new standard, it is now possible to transmit multiple MPEG transport streams on a single multiplex. In addition, the encoding and modulation are no longer fixed, but can be changed even during transmission. This improved version uses an error correction algorithm, making the transmitted signals less sensitive to environmental interference. If the 64-QAM modulation is changed to the new 256-QAM when using the DVB-T2 standard, and the 8k FFT mode is changed to 32k FFT, then with an unchanged error correction code rate of 3/4 and a guard interval of 1/8, a theoretical bandwidth of about 38Mbit/s is obtained, which is a significant increase.

The difference between DVB-T and DVB-T2

DVB-T2 is an improved version of DVB-T that compresses data more, so that more data is transmitted, meaning more channels are available. To receive the new DVB-T2 standard, you will need a compatible TV or an indoor unit that receives DVB-T signals.

Which channels can be received with a DVB-T terrestiel receiver indoor unit?

In our country, this type of indoor unit can be used to receive MinDigTV and MinDigTV Premium services, which started broadcasting in 2008. The commercial digital terrestrial television broadcasting service is provided by Antenna Hungária Zrt. The complete switch-off of analogue channels and the switchover to digital broadcasting took place on 31 October 2013.

Why was this necessary? By using so-called multiplexes, which are packages of radio and TV channels, a larger number of channels can be broadcast. In this light, MinDig TV offers 12 programmes for free instead of the 3 analogue channels it used to offer. An additional advantage of this standard is that it offers better picture quality even in dimly lit hilly landscapes. In a broadcast with a DVB-T signal, problems can occur if there is a disturbance in the LTE signal strength. This is where an antenna amplifier or LTE filters can help.

What do you need to receive a DVB-T signal?

In order to receive terrestrial television broadcasting channels, you will need a DVB-T antenna, coaxial cable and a DVB-T receiver and, of course, a modern television set.

What amenities are available with the DVB-T indoor unit?

For example, the electronic programme guide, abbreviated EPG, is available. This allows programme information to be displayed on the screen. You can schedule programmes quickly and easily if you are unable to watch the programme. You can set multiple TV and radio programmes as favourites, and subtitle programmes in other languages as well as in Hungarian. There's also the option to turn on the TV and have the receiver display the last channel you watched.

Can the DVB-T indoor unit receive DVB-S and DVB-C signals?

In the case of the DVB-C designation, the letter C here refers to Cable, meaning that DVB-C simply means broadcasting over conventional cable TV. DVB-C is exactly the same as DVB-S or DVB-T, except that it is not broadcast over radio waves, but over cable. If your television is able to receive this type of signal, it is recommended that you contact your cable TV provider. Instead of an indoor unit, you should ask for a card, which you can insert into your own TV and watch the programmes you have chosen.

And in the case of DVB-S, the letter S stands for satellite TV, which is short for Satellite, which is broadcasts using an indoor unit. Some TV sets have DVB-S receivers installed. It is useless, because in many cases we cannot use it at home. However, if your TV is DVB-S compatible, it is worth asking, there may have been a development in this direction and you can use it with a decoder card. As today's modern televisions have a 3 tuner design, but only 2 inputs, i.e. you can connect either a DVB-T or DVB-C cable to them. DVB-S must always be handled separately because it requires a different frequency range. DVB-T and DVB-C use the same frequency band.
