Multiband Antennas up to 500Mhz

- further categories

There are multi-band antennas that work on the basis that the frequency bands are multiples of each other, meaning that an antenna with half a wavelength in one band can resonate in some form in the other bands. In practice, this means that, for example, a half-wave antenna scaled for the 80 m band will behave as a full-wave antenna in the 40 m band, while a 20 or 15 or 10 m band will behave as a 2λ, 3λ or 4 λ antenna. In addition, we also distinguish multiband antennas whose lengths are tuned to the frequency of interest using parallel resonant circuits. What exactly does this mean? A high resistance is created at the resonant frequency of the resonant circuit, which causes the antenna to cut off the resonant part of the frequency.

What frequency ranges does the multiband antenna cover?

This depends largely on the type of antenna. The scanner antenna uses a frequency range of 25-130MHz. A car antenna uses a frequency band between 46.5-61.5MHz and 135-175MHz. The amateur multi-band antenna uses a frequency band between 141-149 MHz, the UHF antenna uses a frequency band between 422-447 MHz, the base antenna uses a frequency band between 120-300 MHz or 144-430 MHz, and the VHF/UHF multi-band antenna also uses a frequency band between 144-430 MHz.

How to choose the right antenna type for your application?

What antenna you choose depends largely on the device you are placing it on. If you want an antenna for your handheld radio, you will need what is called a coil antenna. The name comes from the fact that the antenna consists of a wire that forms a coil. This is covered with rubber or plastic by the manufacturers. This is why some people call it a rubber antenna.

Their size does not exceed 12 centimetres, their efficiency is less than that of a λ/4 antenna. If a base antenna is used, which is fixed, then a specially matched λ/2 antenna with a sealed enclosure must be used. In the case of vehicle antennas, the λ/4 radiators are counterbalanced by the vehicle body. But λ/2 antennas can also be mounted on the windscreen of the car.

What distances is this antenna designed for and is there a range limitation?

The range of an antenna attached to a handheld transceiver is usually no more than 5-6 km, but with a base antenna placed 15 meters above the ground, you can communicate effectively up to 10-12 km. A car antenna can have a much longer range. Perhaps one of the most important details for a good range is that the antenna is well installed.

Because in this case the maximum range can be easily achieved even with less power. If you are thinking of doubling the power of the antenna, the range will not increase in direct proportion. What we can achieve, however, is to improve the quality of reception for weakly reached transceivers. It is also important to pay attention to the sensitivity of the transceiver.

What safety measures should be taken when using an antenna?

Choosing the right antenna requires careful attention. One of the most important rules is that the antenna must match the characteristics of the transceiver and meet its requirements. When choosing an antenna, you should also pay attention to lightning protection. This is to ensure that the transceiver and other equipment connected to it cannot be destroyed by lightning. But by using lightning protection, you can protect your transceiver not only from lightning strikes, but also from surges and static electricity. For base antennas, you can also choose to ground the antenna mast or use an antenna lightning arrester.

Is there a recommended installation height or angle that will optimise the performance of the antenna?

Choosing the correct installation height depends on the environment, so this can only be determined in each case by knowing the specific environment. If the installation is correct, then there will be no SWR problem, but if the correct installation is not possible because the environment is not ideal, then care should be taken to avoid placing the antenna near a large reflecting surface.

Why? Because in this case the signal reflected from it and returned to the antenna can degrade its performance. However, this problem can not only lead to a reduction in range, but can also affect the transceiver's output power.

Are there any recommended configurations for antenna setup?

This is not possible for radio and car-mounted antennas, but it is for base antennas. Since each antenna installation is different, it is possible to determine the most appropriate configuration for each case. In this case, experts will calculate the best solution for a densely populated area, for example. In many cases, the best solution is to place the antenna on the highest point.

But beware of placing the antenna on a huge mast in this case, as the loss due to excessive height is already greater due to the length of the cable than the benefit of increased height.
